DOBOKU Civil Engineering at 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT

WOW magazine 103 - Jun. 1st, 2016

In order to support a comfortable and high quality daily life, streets are wholly designed and this becomes fundamental engineering works. In our transportation network such as roads and railways, telecommunication technology such as mobile phones and the Internet, water and sewer services, and necessities for disaster preparedness, etc., engineering works is something that is indispensable in our daily lives. Engineering works, which is represented by the characters for “Earth” and “Wood”, are things that can be found in the environment around us. Furthermore, it is said to be “Engineering for the people”, just like what they call “Civil Engineering” in English.

However, no matter how closely related our daily lives and civil engineering are, there are not many opportunities to realize that. The most important occasion in which we could actually feel it in the recent years was being able to pick them up in the news during times of emergency such as the occurrence of disasters. This exhibition is a happy and beautiful visualization of the powerful “hidden engineering works” realized through such opportunities. It is an original exhibition that is the first in the engineering field to combine the ever-earnest and ever-reliable civil engineering, and the collaboration with authors who are not expertise in this field.

WOW’s participating work, “I’ll protect you: I’m here for you.”

The work produced by WOW is an installation to convey the message that wave-dissipating concrete blocks and concrete blocks in flood plains protect us from disasters in our lives and natural environment. In view of the existing harsh and slightly intimidating image of civil engineering, the production has a comedic touch to it in order to make people realize that they should feel a sense of familiarity because engineering is so close to us. In addition, as the period during which the exhibition is held coincides with the summer holidays for children, we have focused our attention on making it comical so that it would be enjoyable for both children and adults, and that it would be easy to understand. We show what the existence of civil engineering means in preventing incidents from happening, rather than protecting us after incidents happen. We made it into a form of story development on comparing the effect of having or not having such engineering works. Furthermore, you can experience a life-size wave-dissipating concrete block that will appear on the 5-meter tall projection wall. Please be sure to visit us on this occasion.
