CITIZEN Eco-Drive PHOTON / How It Works
CITIZEN|2026
To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the launch of Eco-Drive, the world's first analog light-powered technology, Citizen released a limited-edition model called the "Eco-Drive PHOTON." WOW was tasked with planning, directing, and producing the product video for this model, as well as directing and producing the "How It Works" video, which explains the Eco-Drive mechanism.
Eco‑Drive PHOTON: 50th Anniversary Limited Edition
01.
The Eco-Drive PHOTON, Citizen's limited-edition model commemorating the 50th anniversary of Eco-Drive, was inspired by the "double-slit experiment," a science experiment that demonstrates the wave-particle duality of light. The two dials, with slits resembling wave-like ripples, evoke light interference patterns. The video visualizes the paths of photons, and makes it appear as if the watch's contours and details are brought to life by their light. Using the scientific concept underpinning the watch as the starting point, "light" as a phenomenon was intersected with "the watch" as a symbol of time, and their relationship was expressed as a single visual. Just as the study of light has evolved through new discoveries, the aim was to create a video that suggests further possibilities opened up by Eco-Drive technology.

Eco-Drive Explanation Video, "How it Works"
02.
Using the 50th-anniversary limited edition Eco-Drive PHOTON, the video explains how the Eco-Drive mechanism converts even the smallest amount of ambient light into electrical power to drive the watch. Set in an abstract space and evoking neon streetlights or rays of light piercing the darkness, the video depicts the entire process through which the Eco-Drive keeps time—from photons striking the solar cells to power storage, IC chip control, and the driving of the motor and gears. By accurately depicting core technologies and deconstructing them from a structural perspective, the video portrays the technical expertise Citizen has cultivated over the last half-century and the forward-looking design philosophy behind it.
