What the Experience of BAKERU Conveys to the Future
BAKERU | Original Project
BAKERU is an interactive installation that combines traditional performing arts from Japan’s Tōhoku region—such as Namahage (Mountain Ogre) and Shishi-odori (Beast Dance)—with digital art, allowing visitors to visually immerse themselves in these cultural traditions. By wearing a mask and standing in front of a screen, participants can bakeru (“transform” in Japanese) into figures inspired by Tōhoku's traditional performing arts. Created primarily by members of WOW's Sendai office, the project has been exhibited both in Japan and internationally since its debut in March 2017. It was selected for the Media Arts category of the Agency for Cultural Affairs' Comprehensive Support Program for Performing Arts (School Touring Performances). Children in elementary and junior high schools across Japan continue to engage with BAKERU as part of their cultural and artistic education through hands-on classes.

- Mission
- Through digital art, this project reimagines traditional performing arts as an interactive experience, creating new opportunities to learn about the rich culture and climate of the Tōhoku region.
- Approach
- The digital artwork centers on the theme of “transformation,” a common element seen in the Tōhoku region's traditional performing arts where people take on non-human identities by wearing a mask and standing in front of a screen.
