Roppongi Art Night at Tokyo Midtown |2010
WOW provided an audio-visual installation in commemoration of three years since the opening of Tokyo Midtown and for Roppongi Art Night. Motion graphics portraying two contrasting subjects were projected onto a huge column, with a height of 7.5m and a diameter of 2m. One theme featured natural motifs that evoked “the advent of spring” (light, wind, and water), and the other showed lively urban motifs like road signs and neon lights in the city that represented “the lively bustle of Roppongi”. The sounds that one heard on approaching these images drew an invisible boundary around the column creating an encompassing environment displaying a close relationship between motion graphics and sound design.

About the Exhibition
The installation was exhibited at Plaza Canopy Square, which is a huge open space on the ground floor of Tokyo Midtown. A total of six projectors were used on the curved column screen. To help maintain the beauty and visual presence of the structure, we produced the column in conjunction with a structural engineer with additional consideration for safety and stability. The seamless columned projection was a beautiful form in itself, and people wandered around the piece enjoying it from every angle. Nine directional speakers allowed people nearby the column to hear the sound of the movie and also let people standing further away from the column hear ambient sounds. Layered sounds created an environment that allowed people to feel surrounded by the sound.
